Have you ever heard of a more perfect pitch for a television show? It’s Mary J. Blige talking to other people, while making their way through a load of wine. Honestly, this should have been on TV for 20something years already. And what is it called? ‘The Wine Down’, that’s what it is called, and that is also perfect.

If Mary J promises to show off the strongest knees in R&B too, then inject the whole thing directly into our eyeballs without passing Go.

The show will be on BET and, more pertinently, screencapped and memed all over black Twitter, and it’s going to be tremendous. It’s the latest in the long line of US talk shows that aren’t like your regular desk-and-interview affairs, but rather, looser, more freewheeling real talk. And Mary J Blige at the helm? Good lord, it’s sincerely going to be magnificent because that woman has seen some shit. And she’s got shit to say. And she’ll be talking to other people who have seen some shit and who have shit to say, you just know it.

According to a report, The Wine Down will feature Mary having “raw, provocative, insightful and real” conversations with “the hottest, most outspoken” celebrities over wine.

Blige just happens to have launched her own media company (Blue Butterfly media, c 2019) and it’ll be some hot unscripted action, and there’ll be a plentiful supply of wine as Mary also has her own line from the vine, called Sun Goddess, which she launched with an Italian winemaker Marco Fantinel a couple of years ago. The stars lined-up nicely there didn’t they?

Mary J Blige can do whatever she wants, after a glittering career of hits, thigh-high boots, and of course, a prime spot in the Super Bowl half-time concert with Knedrick, Dre, Snoop and more. She’s truly one of the best, is the realest of the real, and turned out to be quite the actor too. Hats off to you Mary! Get the booze out, we’re ready.
