Olivia Rodrigo seems to be doing it right. She was catapulted to fame with a giganto hit and, instead of thinking ‘sod it, let’s make a cash grab and do all the arenas immediately!’, she’s made a conscious decision to play smaller venues, and if the arenas come, then she feels she will have earned them. Same goes for festival slots, where she’s played mid-afternoon shows, as she kicks out her brand of brassy pop-punk for the kids.
While so many young acts are painfully aware of their image and oh-so-careful to curate every moment of their lives, Rodrigo seems to be having fun, be it randomly showing up to bars in Manchester to do a Natalie Imbruglia cover unannounced, and now, releasing a Christmas song she wrote when she was 5 years old. Now, if this was a lesser pop-star, we suspect that this would have been re-recorded now, and the whole thing being a bit fishy and a bit too good to be believed.
Not Rodrigo. Wait ’til you hear this. It’s the cutest thing you’ll hear.
This Xmas song is something she wrote AND recorded when she was little. This is amateur hour and all the better for it. Listen to a baby Olivia Rodrigo taking herself incredibly seriously on a track called ‘the bels’ and oh, it’s just the joy of youth and all that’s good in the world. There’s a decent harmony in it too. Very nice.
