WORDS ABOUT MUSIC + POP CULTURE

SAM SMITH VERSUS SAUCEPAN

We like a popstar making bold choices, and Sam Smith has been doing exactly that lately. It doesn’t matter whether you like the tunes or not, we should absolutely support a commercial artist when they lean into the experimental and off-kilter.

Did you see them on SNL, with Sharon Stone draping themselves all over the shop, beat-less, choir-led, and schpooky as you like? It was good value, and no mistake about that. Don’t worry. We’re getting to the saucepan.

First, have a look.

Smith (who, as an aside, has never looked better – these things shouldn’t matter when it comes to art, but as this is pop music, we get a bit shallow) has had something to do with a saucepan. Making music with it? They’ve not gone that avant garde (yet), rather, this is something to do with a fan who was a bit keen.

That headline is a lispers nightmare isn’t it? We digress.

Smith was on The Drew Barrymore Show and asked about some of the more unusual encounters with fans. They replied: “It was very odd. I was outside a venue and they gave me a saucepan – and inside the frying pan was an envelope and inside the envelope was a mobile phone. And then, on the letter, it just said, ‘Meet me in the library tomorrow.’”

Barrymore asked what we all would have asked. Did they?

“No, absolutely not – but I’ve always wanted to know what went down at the library.”
