If you missed it, Lil Yachty has gone psychedelic. Now, we’re not talking full mid ’70s German progressive cosmic rock psychedelic, so don’t get your hopes up. However, he is spreading his wings away from robo-pop/kindergarten-trap. That’s always fun isn’t it?
His first new LP in ages, he’s released ‘Let’s Start Here’ and it’s taking its cues from the current crop of psychedelic rock and pop. And it has the cast to prove it.
A lot of the LP was produced by Chairlift’s Patrick Wimberly, Justin and Jeremiah Raisen and Jacob Portrait from Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Helping out with the writing is King Of The Bums, Mac DeMarco, as well as Ben Goldwasser from MGMT, as well as Alex G too. There’s more people, but we fear we’d be labouring the point somewhat.
Any more names and we’d be giving you the number of the guy who probably sold Yachty some mushrooms, or something.
A while back, Yachty said of his LP: “It’s alternative.”
He continued: “It’s like a psychedelic alternative project. It’s different. It’s all live instrumentation… I’ve changed my dynamic… I’m creating music a whole lot differently.”
The track above is obviously a single, but maybe more indicative of the new psychedelic sound from way out is this cut called ‘the ride’. A swirling, heady mix of electronics and faraway gazes. It’s interesting stuff and it’s great to see Yachty still taking chances and making moves after being rudely dismissed as a dead-cert for being a one-hit wonder all those years ago.
