WORDS ABOUT MUSIC + POP CULTURE

NILE RODGERS VS ST VINCENT

Nile Rodgers, still reminding us how many classic songs he wrote and produced even though everyone knows by now, is working with St Vincent and, honestly, that sounds like a marriage made in heaven.

Rodgers, of course, has been having something of a resurgence this past few years, contributing to Daft Punk’s big hitters and a very underrated track with Disclosure and Sam Smith, and lighting up the festivals and outdoors parties across the world! And St Vincent has been oozing late ’70s/early ’80s sleaze with her brilliant newest persona that seems to be called ‘Daddy’.

Her sharp, cocaine art-rock mixed with Nile’s dirty club funk, it feels like it can’t fail. Obviously it might, but we should choose to be optimistic, especially given both artists having incredibly broad tastes and influences.

Taking on IG, Rodgers wrote: “Working on new music with St. Vincent”, adding the the whole experience is “fucking wonderful”.

Speaking to Rolling Stone a while back, Rodgers said of St Vincent: “Somehow she was introduced into my life only a few months ago. I started to go back and listen to the work she had done with my old engineer and she started sending me some new stuff. I was like ‘wow! That’s really cool’.”

He continued: “I would have never thought of using the guitar like that or composing like that and it was really interesting. It was very eclectic and she was using different ways of expressing herself, the fact that we’re vibing so much is interesting because just as guitarists we are very different. The fact she’s doing what she’s doing is really fascinating to me.”

Listen to some of her latest stuff and you can see what Rodgers will bring to the party. Of course, St Vincent is incredibly talented in their own right too, but sparks might fly here and that’s a good thing. She’s been incredibly well-dressed lately too, and if you think that’s shallow, then you’re a liar who is trying to say you’re not influenced by ace wardrobe choices by an artist.

There’s no dates or any concrete information other than what Rodgers posted on his Instagram (have a look here if you like) and he says he’s trying to not lose his mind, which can only be a fun thing.

Let’s hope this one is a winner.
