It’s kinda hideous to liken anyone to any of the flag-bearers of Neo Soul, but it is handy when you’re trying to convey that we’re dealing with a modern artist that is able to both look forward with their music, but also use all the rich musical past that exists, especially in soul music. So with that, we think you’re going to like the new one from Yaya Bey.
On her ‘Remember Your North Star’ LP, Yaya showed a multitude of talents, taking in forward thinking singer-soulwriting, jazz, reggae, ’70s fusion soul and funk… and it was highly and critically rated and all the heads’ heads were nodding in agreement. Bey writes intelligent songs, but they’re direct too, punching you square in the chest.
Don’t be put off if you’re think that this is all irritatingly worthy nonsense and a tough listen – this is great stuff and now there’s a new track and you can listen to her instead of us.
Get on this.
