WHEN ASKED WHAT QUEEN’S BEST SONG IS, ANSWER THIS

There’s going to be an anniversary of Queen releasing their first LP, and with that, Radio 2 have asked their listeners to vote on what the group’s best song is.

Of course, one of the massive stadium filling songs is going to win, but honestly, someone should rig the vote and have it so something from ‘Hot Space’ wins, so we can all acknowledge Freddie’s wild extended weekend where he got right into synthesisers and drum machines, while getting off with loads of lads in Germany.

Of course, the mighty John Deacon (Queen’s finest member) was already pushing for more of an R&B/Disco sound with the group, and was a pivotal player in the ‘Hot Space’ sessions. And Brian May (told he wasn’t allowed to do a load of solos) and Roger Taylor (effectively replaced with drum machines) weren’t fans of the LP, despite ‘Another One Bites The Dust’ and ‘Under Pressure’ being on it and giganto hits. Go figure.

Roger Taylor in an interview said Mercury’s personal manager “wanted our music to sound like you’d just walked in a gay bar…and I didn’t”. However, Michael Jackson was a fan and would go on to cite ‘Hot Space’ as one of the big influences on ‘Thriller’, so whaddayagonnado?

Anyway, our choice of a cool Queen track isn’t going to win and in fact, our favourite isn’t even on the list of 75 so it’s basically an excuse to share our love for ‘Cool Cat’ because it’s a slow sophisticated banger.

Steve Wright will announce what it is on Monday 10th April at 4pm if you care. You can vote at bbc.co.uk/queenvote if you’re into that kind of thing.
