HUEY LEWIS: COOL GUY, HASN’T SEEN AMERICAN PSYCHO

Huey Lewis is genuinely a cool guy. He’s like the ’80s John Sebastian or something. Great songs, approachable, the people’s champ! Well, his band features heavily in the lore of American Psycho, and even though the movie was released in 2000, he’s still not seen it. Neither have we. We’ve seen a lot of memes about it though.

It’s said that Huey boycotted the film because it was so violent, but that sounds like a load of old cobblers to us. In fact, Lewis has denied these claims, even though plenty of bozos have said words to the contrary. So what happened?

Well, he’s done an interview with a podcast and Mark Hoppus, called the After School Radio show.

He said: “I’d read Bret Ellis’ book, which is amazing. When I read the book, it was like a review of art stuff. And not only us, but Phil Collins and Tina Turner, and man, he really knew his stuff, he got us pretty much correct.” The movie’s producer got in touch with Huey, to buy ‘Hip To Be Square’ for use in the flick, which was agreed upon. Then, they wanted to use it for the soundtrack, and that’s where Lewis wasn’t feeling it.

Lewis’ manager said that the soundtrack would be ‘Hip To Be Square’, and “one other song and then a bunch of source music.”

And why is Huey Lewis the people’s champ? Well, him and the band decided to “politely decline” as they did not want to “make our fans buy that for just that one song”.

“On the eve of the release of the movie, they came out with a press release that went everywhere that said that Huey Lewis had seen the movie and it was so violent that he yanked his tune from the soundtrack, to pump up interest,” Lewis added. “And that pissed me off frankly, so I boycotted the film. I’ve never seen the film, but I did see the clip when we lampooned it for Funny or Die.”
