John Cameron is a British music legend and you’ll definitely know his work knowingly or otherwise. If you’re wondering who he is, then if you’ve watched ‘Kes’, that’s him doing the soundtrack (and what a perfect soundtrack it is). If you’ve listened to Donovan, then he pretty much did the arrangements on all of Donovan’s best bits. He’s worked with Cilla Black, Hot Chocolate, and his version of ‘Whole Lotta Love’ was on Top of the Pops for years.
Want more? He was the music director for The Bobbie Gentry Show and the BBC’s ‘In Concert’ series which included Joni Mitchell and Randy Newman. He did films with Elizabeth Taylor and Glenda Jackson, scored ‘Psychomania’ and worked on library music bits with the also legendary Keith Mansfield.
He’s also instrumental in the emergence of Les Misérables and more. Awards, he’s got ’em.
Coming out of the UK jazz scene, he was an arranger in-demand, and his influence can be heard everywhere in British and American pop music. You like a bit of funk and woodwind? Cameron’s your man. And in great news, Ace Records have made a compilation of Cameron’s funkiest and folkiest work, which is definitely worth your time. It’s CD only at the moment, but you feel that there may be a vinyl run of this all things well in the world. Have a look here for tracklisting and purchasing.
