Boney M are brilliant and if you look through their back catalogue, there is a lot of strange gold in there. And a load of gems, obviously.
Now, we considered making a running, regular piece on strange or unlikely cover versions (and we still might) but for now, we’ll focus on Boney M.
For example, did you know they covered Iron Butterfly? There’s almost no sensible reason why this exists, but it does, and we’re thrilled.
Digging deeper into the world of psychedelic rock music, even stranger still, is Boney M’s version of Freakbeat classic ‘Painter Man’ by The Creation.
Yes, really.
And also, they tackled Neil Young’s weary anthem, ‘Heart of Gold’.
A country rock masterpiece for sure, but that doesn’t stop Boney M and why should it? It doesn’t matter whether you like it. You’re just happy it’s a thing.
A while ago, we looked into how these choices were made and they’ve escaped our head now. There’s a vague link with someone who was in a UK psych band who went to Germany, but we can’t remember now.
Let us know if you know.
