WORDS ABOUT MUSIC + POP CULTURE

KESHA IS NOT FUCKING AROUND

Kesha’s time with Dr Luke will go down in music history as one of the most troubling chapters we’ve seen, at least in recent years. There’ll be documentaries about it, for sure. Go acquaint yourself if you haven’t already, but get comfy, because there’s a lot to bone up with.

If you know already, then she’s releasing a new LP on May 19th and it is called ‘GAG ORDER’ and the artwork (above) has ruffled a few feathers, with some observers saying it’s ‘frightening’. Powerful, provocative, certainly.

This new album has been produced by Rick Rubin and Kesha has been teasing artwork from it and, let’s face it, we’re all looking at that LP title and wondering what’s going to be said in the verses of the songs contained within. She’s referring to it as her ‘post pop’ record, and we’re very interested in it.

Elsewhere, she wrote in something of a manifesto in Nylon mag: “Without the darkness there is no light. I finally let my darkness have the light.  I cannot fight the truth of this life being difficult and painful. It is for everyone.”

“An artist doesn’t exist to make others happy. I believe an artist gives voice, motion, colour to the emotions we all have. The good emotions, and the unmanageably fucking miserable ones.”

There’ll be singles later in the week, so we’ll get a notion of what it might sound like. This could be powerful and fascinating stuff. We sure hope so. Kesha deserves to get her flowers after being miscast for years as a hipster mess. Rubin’s involvement will surely mean that she’s at least being real with herself and in turn, us.

Could be a winner. Fingers crossed!
