One of the best hidden gems of the Noughties is Eiafuawn’s ‘Birds In The Ground’ LP and perfectly captured that weird need for music to provide a sense of unease as well as comfort in post 9/11 America. Think of how much we were all listening to Grandaddy and Will Oldham records, right?
An off-shoot of Duster, Clay Parton fired up the four-track and gave us an usual and beguiling LP and named the project after the acronym Everything Is All Fucked Up And What Not, layering up fuzzy guitars, vapour like vocals and a true DIY ethic, rather than the expensively made studio facsimile of it. It’s cryptic and magic and if you missed out on it at the time, it’s been lovingly repressed. If it’s new to you, go nuts!
If you need a harder sell than gorgeous lo-fi, experimental rock, fans of Tommy Guerrero will dig this. So will fans of Tortoise. And alt-folkies and those who like pre-emo and slacker stuff.
It really is fine stuff, trust us.
Oh, and if you’re wondering how to pronounce Eiafuawn, our best stab is ee-uh-fon, and chances are, you’ll only meet one other person who loves this LP in your life, but they’ll probably be your pal for life if you do, so don’t hang about getting into it.
Numero Uno have repressed the album and they’re a bunch of solid guys you can trust, and you can grab your vinyl copy direct or the lovely guys at Norman Recs have some in stock. Not for long, you suspect.
