What was that song The XX did? It was alright wasn’t it? To some, that sentence is probably sacrilege as The XX felt like the most important group in the world for a period (and probably for a certain type of person trying to navigate 2009 – swine flu, the death of Michael Jackson etc). They mixed electronics with indie sensibilities and wore dark clothes and had an elegant pop that was in sharp relief to GaGa’s all conquering stadium anthems and the Black Eyed Peas’ various meme-bops.
Well, Romy from the group has since gone solo and has shared a new track called ‘The Sea’, which again, is elegant and thoughtful and is taken from the imminent solo LP ‘Mid Air’.
The song’s promo video features Romy and her wife, director and photographer Vic Lentaigne. Regarding that, she’s said: “I can now write about loving a woman and not feel afraid”, and that can only be a good thing, as it’s clear that Romy is one of the more shy stars we’ve seen in recent years. She once sang: “I go to loud places to find someone to be quiet with”, which is as sharp as a tack.
Anyway, here’s the new song. You’ll like it. It puts us in mind of those fun remixes of Everything But The Girl, which might be a lazy comparison, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being likened to EBTG.
We’re rooting for her.
