Hiroshi Nagai is the man who you may have seen the work of on a number of City Pop releases – for the uninitiated, that’s the cool ’70s and ’80s Japanese pop music that’s impossibly sophisticated; a bit like Yacht Rock with a smidge of disco and jazz fusion.
Nagai’s work is synonymous with Japanese pop music and there’s going to be a Sound Burger record player getting released that’s made in collaboration with the great man.
Unfortunately for us, we’re trying to work out exactly what’s going on via a Google translated page that’s originally written in Japanese, so we’re mildly confused.
What we do know is that there’s going to be an exhibition called ‘Palm Street Songs’ from August 2, 2023 at Isetan in Tokyo. There’s, you’ll be able to look at the great man’s work, new bits and they’ll also have merch, which is no doubt going to be limited and whatnot, so you better get ready to spend big with the resellers if you’re not over in Japan yourself.
During the exhibition, Hiroshi Nagai himself is going to appear but, enigmatically, he’s not said exactly when. It feels very much like a ‘aye, I’ll pop in at some point’.

Now, the Sound Burger. You can click here to buy it,
The Nagai Sound Burger is made in conjunction with Audio-Technica and has that glorious retro design and is the new version of it, which means it has Bluetooth connectivity and USB charging. With this version, you’ll also get a postcard from Nagai himself. Very nice indeed.
There’ll also be craft beers featuring Nagai’s art, books and all manner of fun stuff. However, it’s the record player that’s going to get everyone foaming at the mouth trying to land one. Good luck!
