‘Spunky!’ is the name of the LP and Grrrl Gang are the band, and you’re going to be hearing a lot of them in the coming months. Every so often, a group appears and it just feels like everyone’s rooting for them – this is the latest band that feel like that.
The debut album is out, the tour is booked in, and for fans of classic noisy indie and music that sounds like a good night out and getting covered in weak lager, Grrrl Gang are definitely for you. Remember fun? These Indonesian noiseniks do!
They’ve been knocking around since ’16 with a sporadic release of singles and EPs, so while this is a debut, they’ve been cutting their teeth on the circuit for a while. They’ve landed themselves an NME cover, so the time seems to be now. They say of themselves that they’re an “indie pop trio that’s up to no good”, which is exactly what you want to be hearing a band say.
The new LP has a zinger of a lyric that we can’t get out of our head: “I’m a useless cum dump – I’m neurotic, manic, borderline psychotic.” How great is that? The music direct, the content, more complicated – and it’s all chaotic.
