Kacey Musgraves last LP got a mixed response, even though we really liked huge chunks of it. Fact is, Kacey is a psychedelic breath of fresh air in a country scene that’s really bogged down in rootsiness at the moment. Obviously, rootsy business is stock-in-trade in the world of country – it always has been – but Kacey takes acid and also loves pop music, and there’s genuinely no-one quite like her around.
With all that in mind, she’s been beavering away on her own stuff without too many clues since the release of her D.I.V.O.R.C.E. LP, ‘Star-crossed’. But now she’s made a step back, in a bruised, lowly lit duet with Madi Diaz.
Just so you know, this is a Madi Diaz single, so really, we shouldn’t be making out this is all about Kacey, but y’know, we do get carried away and Madi is obviously as much a fan of Musgraves as we are.
Diaz has a new LP coming out called ‘Weird Faith’ and this new track with Kacey is called ‘Don’t Do Me Good’, and Madi says: “I am so happy Kacey said ‘yes’ when I asked her to sing on ‘Don’t Do Me Good. This song would have been so awfully lonely without her and I am so grateful I get to hear her voice on this with mine.”
“This song is about that person that we keep coming back to no matter how many times they let us down.” Diaz added. “It’s about waking up every day and making the choice to love a person unconditionally while it’s simultaneously getting harder and harder to ignore that nothing is getting better in the relationship. It’s stubborn, it’s defiant, it’s hopeful, and it’s aggressively optimistic. It’s about being a bit of a masochist and being so in love with the hard work of loving a person that you don’t know how to walk away from them.”
The LP is out in February ’24 and one last fun fact – Madi Diaz’s dad is apparently in a Frank Zappa tribute act, and that’s cool isn’t it?
