Look, we’ve already written a love letter to The Kinks on here, so it should be of no surprise that we’re in full-blown love affair mode right now. That’s because The Kinks are teasing something of a comeback.
They’ve apparently got a number of songs written and obviously, Ray and Dave Davies have a complicated relationship, so we’re not going to start hurrying them or anything, BUT A TOUR WOULD BE REALLY NICE THANKS.
Ray told the NME: “Well, it got shelved because of… other issues. But there’s still material there. When I get time,” adding that he’s been pottering around with some demos and they feature contributions from Dave, and perhaps more surprising, drummer Mick Avory. “We’ve got loads of songs there in pieces… about 20. There are about two or three songs I want to finish, and when they’re finished, I’ll put the whole thing together.”
As fans of The Kinks, wouldn’t it be lovely to shower them with love while they stand on stage? Wouldn’t that be great. We don’t expect that this material is going to be earth-shattering, but with Ray Davies, you never know do you? Him and Nick Lowe are ageing beautifully.
IN FACT, THERE YOU GO. NICK LOWE SUPPORT SLOT. KINKS HEADLINING. DO IT. WE’LL PAY WHATEVER YOU WANT. MAKE IT HAPPEN PLEASE.
Ray referred to any shows as “in the lap of the gods” and that the whole notion wasn’t just “getting a show that gives us the credit we deserve” but more a case of getting Dave to agree: “You’ve gotta be careful because he’ll run off in one direction and I in mine… he’s like that. He stays in control. I’m just a well-meaning big brother.”
Dave added: “We’re just different animals. We found ourselves at a very young age being in each other’s faces. And we had to work with it somehow.”
Until then, we’ll always have the beautiful image from a couple of years ago, of the Davies brothers having a stroll while on the cans.
