INDIE SLEAZE COMEBACK / THE GOSSIP RETURN

Remember Indie Sleaze? You should, because a load of people who loved it an university and sixth form are now the age where they’re editing music pages in broadsheets and making documentaries and all that, so it’s about to go full-blown-revival. The fashion was chaotic and fun, and there were some decent tunes in there too.

There was the recent Meet Me In The Bathroom film which looked at the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Strokes, LCD Soundsystem and that, and now, strap on your lamé leggings and start using too much flash on your photos, because The Gossip are coming back. Well timed run, that.

It’s roughly a decade since ‘Standing In The Way Of Control’ came out and Beth Ditto was the glorious cover star of the NME. Now, there’ll be a new LP called ‘Real Power’, and honestly, of all the bands of the past, they were lively and aggressive enough for it to be a welcome return.

The album is out in March by the way.

They’ve made it with the slightly too ubiquitous Rick Rubin (he’s lovely, no question about that, but in our Might Start A Cult sweepstake, he’s the big draw), who in fairness, they made ‘Music For Men’ with, so ignore all that.

Speaking about the return, Ditto said: “When we began, so much about Gossip was about running away – that was always in the music. We survived. We came from nothing, and we got the fuck out of there. To be here 20 years later and still making music together is just incredible.”

Anyway, good to have Beth back. Now, if you need it, remind yourself of what a banger this is.
