WORDS ABOUT MUSIC + POP CULTURE

NEW BOSSA JAZZ YOU NEED IN YOUR LIFE

If you’re into bossa nova and cool jazz, then we’ve got some good news for you! You don’t have to ferret around looking for old LPs (as nice as that is), because in January, there’s a new one that’ll tickle your pickle.

Called ‘The Room’, the cut is by Brazilian guitarist Fabiano do Nascimento and American saxophonist Sam Gendel, and listening to it, you’ll feel a great deal more sophisticated, like someone who has a martini on their lunch and can afford a shag pile carpet. It’s nice to dream isn’t it, in this financial climate?

Ten instrumental tracks, balmy and well-crafted, you’ll hear a couple of musicians who have a great deal of musical empathy for each other and that, dear reader, is exactly the kind of thing you’ll be thinking to yourself while listening to it. It’s lofty stuff, but in a nice way.

Apply here if you’re a fan of the Getz/Gilberto LP, even if that’s something of a slightly lazy likeness.

The press release tells us that this beauty was recorded in just two days, which is some feat!

“We were making music that we had a real mutual appreciation for,” says do Nascimento. “I was always joking that Sam should play flute, and he tried multiple things before he got this unique [flute] sound out of his soprano. Most people don’t actually realise that it’s a saxophone.”

Here’s a teaser. We’ll be getting a copy for ourselves, come 2024.
