As much as we love glittery pop and divas, it’s fair to say that the media landscape’s representation of gay people can be rather one-dimensional.

So with that, we’ve just caught wind of something that looks to shake things up in a fun way, and it’s got a real zinger of a name whichever way you look at it.

Kunt Up Music FM (or KUM FM for short) is a new independent station that will shine a light on Bristol’s vibrant queer scene, and they want to spotlight LGBTQIA+ artists, whatever the genre they’re making.

“The music played on the station will host a variety of genres and formats,” said spokesperson James when speaking to Resident Advisor. “This could range from indie punk bands to hard dance DJs and collectives. We will aim to focus our Friday and Saturday evening shows on the city’s thriving nightlife scene.”

“This will include genres such as techno, house, hardcore, jungle, electro, UK garage, dubstep, drum & bass, ballroom and disco.”

They added: “To fully encompass the diversity of Bristol’s queer community we will also be producing shows that focus on discussion, debate and promotion, [which] may include shows highlighting events and opportunities available within the community. Other types of shows may discuss pressing issues that involve rights, policies and opinions that are oppressing parts of the community.”

“The station will provide an insight into queer culture and bridge the gap to those outside of the queer circle. These important discussions and insights will hopefully improve the quality of life for queer people in Bristol and beyond.”

Sounds good, eh? The station is brand spanking new so before they hit the airwaves, they’re going to need shows, volunteers, hosts and all that good stuff. See the Instagram page for more, here.

Like we said, we love the camp stuff, but this is a welcome addition to the more hard edge of the queer underground, and there’s definitely room for all of the above.
