We reviewed Andre 3000’s new album, and while it was a ambient flute workout, we couldn’t help thinking about Outkast. It’s kinda unfair of us, but they’re hip hop’s greatest of all time (and we’ll fight you about that, if you like) and we always want to see the greatest in action.
So with that, 3Stacks has been talking about Outkast, now he’s peered over the parapet, and it’s looking hopeful. Dre said that he wanted to once again team up with Big Boi “a long time ago”, and that the duo are “still close”.
Now, Big Boi hadn’t reached out – in part because he was having his own hits in the interim (shout out ‘All Night’), and because; “I think because he knows who I am, and knows what gets me going, he knows what inspires me, he knows when I’m excited about something. You know what I mean?”
“So I think in that sense, he’s never pushed that issue. But I’m sure, like… I want another OutKast album. Yeah, like in my mind – but see, that’s the thing. That’s the human side. I want[ed] an OutKast album a long time ago.”
He continued: “And honestly for me as an individual, it would be gratifying to me to put out a solo rap situation. But not for nobody else at this point. It’s for me because I actually like the challenge of, ‘How could I make this part of my life interesting and rhyme in words?’ You know what I mean? Like how can I do that?”
“So yeah, it’s still a challenge. So I think hopefully with will and intent, something will happen.”
That’s the wonderful thing about Outkast – they do things on their own terms, and some time away from the project doesn’t change that one jot. They’re still brothers in arms. They can do whatever they like, on whatever timeline they like. And importantly, they’ve got a fanbase that understands that.
