LAMBRINI GIRLS GO FOR BRITAIN’S JUGULAR

Lambrini Girls are one of the most popular grot punk bands around right now, and they have a new single out called ‘God’s Country’ which goes after the state of the place we call home, and while it’s about as subtle as a brick in the teeth, you have to admire them for not hiding behind a lot of the post-irony and weary cynicism of their contemporaries.

It’s nice and noisy (you might expect that given it was produced by Gilla Band’s Daniel Fox) and it calls out a lot of shitty stuff in very straightforward language. If you have a teenager howling along to this in their bedroom, then they’re howling along to the right sentiment honestly.

The group say: “Gods Country is our long, overdue call-out of the government and rise of the far right. We wrote this a few months back, when the political landscape had evidently reached a global boiling point. Great Britain. Think colonial, shit-hole, chunk of land. Thriving off unhinged nationalism, fed to us by the right red hand of unelected prime ministers. Despite this, we have the audacity to call our country ‘Great’. So we ask you, ‘Are you sure?’”

They add: “Rishi, Cameron, Cummings, Starmer – you’re all on our shit list.”

While this might not be the most subtle body of lyrics, sometimes you just need someone to pointedly say things like “Daily Mail, bacon baps – racist uncles want their country back; flag-shaggers, Maggie Thatcher, oh Britannia and ‘God Save the King’”.

Also, “I’m sorry bestie, but it’s giving austerity” is one hell of a zinger. We like that line a lot. If zine culture is back and Lambrini Girls are soundtracking that, more power to their elbows!
