WORDS ABOUT MUSIC + POP CULTURE

WE CAN’T MAKE OUR MIND UP ABOUT CHARLI XCX

Noughties fashion is back, obviously, because we only just had a ’90s revival, so it goes without saying. With something of a reappraisal of Paris Hilton, Ed Hardy biker jackets, baby tees, dangerous thinness and being able to see your thongs over your hipster jeans, then you shouldn’t be too surprised that Charli XCX has a new single out called ‘Von Dutch’.

Now, on paper, we should like Charli XCX a whole lot – she’s got a keen eye for scally fashion (we say that sincerely) and she likes to make music designed for the dancefloor and getting trashed with, but there’s something that’s making us shrug our shoulders. We’re happy if you’re a huge fan – we’re just waiting for that all-time banger to make sense of it all.

Sadly, ‘Von Dutch’ ain’t it, even though it kinda sounds like something we’d like. She sings “cult classic but I still pop” which we can’t decide whether we love or it’s a bit annoying – maybe therein lies the rub? She’s sending up celebrity culture though, which is always pretty fun, so we can’t grumble too much.

Anyway, get the Mcat and Jagers on the go – Charli is definitely got her eye on indie sleaze and trashy pop lovers from that period and have a good time with this.
