The Pop Corporation

Shamefully, we forgot to write about Remi Wolf’s brilliant single ‘Cinderella’ and we’ve been hoarding it to ourselves since it got released, bumping along to its New Wave-ish version of modern pop. It’s infectious stuff and Remi is an infectious individual who, with all things being fair in the world, could be the pop star we’ve all been crying out for.

She’s the best kind of brassy and has loads to say, which is always helpful, but when it comes down to it she’s got the thing that truly matters most and that’s killer tunes.

The album is called ‘Big Ideas’ and we won’t get it until July. To tide us over, she’s released two more tracks which has got us nice and excited. If these three songs are anything to go by, she’ll have a hit on her hands.

The first of the two tracks is called ‘Toro’ and she’s said of it: “To be frank, ‘Toro’ is a song about having sex in a hotel.” That forwardness is fun. None of that lousy ‘its about whatever you want it to mean’ fluff that far too many boring musicians utter when they want to appear somewhat enigmatic.

For the real fun zinger though, we go to ‘Alone In Miami’. She says of it and herself: “‘Alone In Miami’ is a song about the week I spent alone in Miami during Art Basel – and is quite literally a detailed and accurate description of what happened while I was there. These two songs showcase the sonic breadth of this album – and you can’t put me into a box bitch so don’t even try.”

We’ll invariably try to put her in a box when it comes to reviewing time because we can’t help it. We’re really looking forward to the album though, and we’re sure she won’t deny us that.
