Euphoric melancholy is one of the true pillars of pop, giving listeners the chance to dance the pain out of their feet and let all the air leave their body while they joyfully singalong with something that might be upsetting. ABBA were the masters of it, and pretty much the whole of soul music. It’s great isn’t it?
Even better is that David McAlmont is back with that beautiful, soaring voice of his. He’s backed by HiFi Sean (formerly Sean Dickson from Soup Dragons no less – and he’s looking well) on a Hi NRG song called ‘Sad Banger’, and it’s all Scott Walker swooning and baroque melodrama, rubbing up against shimmering synths and neon bass patterns. It’s magic.
Their second LP together is out in August and it’s called ‘Daylight’.
