George Harrison accidentally invented the charity concert when he did his ‘Concert For Bangladesh’, which means he is accidentally responsible for Bono singing ‘tonight thank god it’s them instead of you’ for Band Aid. Still, these are good things all told and in 1971 he got a bunch of pals together for a big show and album and it is back, appearing on streaming platforms for the first time.
The original show was across two gigs at Madison Square Garden, and it made people who were otherwise unaware of the plight of 10 million refugees in East Pakistan. Funds were raised for people trying to escape hunger and disease.
Harrison played with Ringo, Clapton, Leon Russell, Billy Preston, Dylan, and Ravi Shankar at the non-profit show and at the time, George said: “The musicians were great. I mean they completely put down their own egos to play together and to do something because the whole vibe of that concert was that it was something bigger than the lot of us.”
Once again, all the proceeds for this new streaming version (with bonus track) will go to UNICEF via the George Harrison Fund. Visit here for more information, and here’s a trailer if you need one.
