WORDS ABOUT MUSIC + POP CULTURE

MUNA: SCARY FANS

MUNA are great, have had a number of hot songs, and with that, have seen their popularity rightly grow. The group’s identity have seen them filling a hole in pop culture which has seen a pocket of fans feeling incredibly seen by them, to use the common parlance of the youth.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it turns out that some of their fans have allowed their behaviour toward the group become problematic. We’ve spoken in-depth about stan culture, and how there’s a line between overzealous behaviour and that of sports fans. MUNA have, as a result, had to echo what Chappell Roan has spoken about, and had to say something themselves.

In a statement, they’ve said: “We love our fans but some stuff has been happening recently that we cannot be silent about. Cyberstalking, hackings, bullying other fans and our loved ones, plus spreading falsehoods about us and our loved ones for clout and attention online has been going on for months and we have to address it now for our own safety and peace of mind.”

“This shit is truly scary for us.”

“And it’s literally embarrassing to have to post about this but here we are. Not gonna say names because you guys know who you are. And we do too. Cut it the fuck out.”

Naomi McPherson of the band added separately: “Beyond disturbed by the behaviour some of the fandom have been engaging in. Treat us and each other with respect. Cannot believe this needs explaining.”

As we know, Roan had previously said “I need to draw lines and set boundaries. I want to be an artist for a very very long time. I’ve been in too many nonconsensual physical and social interactions and I just need to lay it out and remind you, women don’t owe you shit.”

Something has changed in recent years with regards to pop and pop culture and it seems a line is being drawn and we hope that everyone finds a way to play nicely, because all we’re going to do is scare great bands away from doing anything, and we all lose in that instance.
