Legend of US roots rock and cosmic country, JD Souther has left the building aged of 78. Souther was best known for co-writing some of the Eagles biggest smashes – ‘Heartache Tonight’ and ‘New Kid In Town’, and he also worked with Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, Christopher Cross, and the Chicks.
Souther was playing shows right up until his death, last on stage only last week, and according to the statement, he died peacefully in his sleep in New Mexico at home.
Of course, ever the prolific writer, Souther also had a number of solo records too, with the last one released in 2015. He also formed the Souther–Hillman–Furay Band alongside Byrd/Burrito Chris Hillman and Buffalo Springfield’s Richie Furay. He was also the inspiration for Judee Sill’s ‘Jesus Was A Crossmaker’.
JD also was the star of the screen, playing John Dunaway in Thirtysomething in the ’80s, as well as appearing in My Girl 2, Deadline, the country drama Nashville, and others.
