Check this great sounding thing out – there’s a new documentary called ‘Since Yesterday: The Untold Story of Scotland’s Girl Bands’, which will look at some of the all-female groups that have come from Scotland over the last half a century.
Of course, Scotland has had loads of great groups and many of them sorely underrated. Add a dash of sexism to proceedings and you begin to realise just how needed a movie like this is! It’ll be in UK cinemas from October 18th (we’re going to assume it won’t be a massive run, so don’t sleep on getting tickets) and you’ll be able to see the story of these fabulous groups.
If you’re not bothered about the rest of what we have to say and are already sold on the whole thing, tickets for screenings can be found here. Here’s the trailer and we’re hoping for a DVD release too! A nice compilation on vinyl wouldn’t go amiss either!
The project is directed and written by Carla J Easton who happens to be a former member of TeenCanteen, and the story starts with The McKinleys – a ’60s Scottish girl group who had a small hit with ‘Sweet and Tender Romance’, and then look at the likes of Strawberry Switchblade, The Hedrons, Sophisticated Boom Boom, The Ettes, Hello Skinny, The Hedrons and loads more!
Easton has said of the project: “Since I first suggested to Blair (Young, co-director) the idea of a documentary about the history of women who had formed bands in Scotland way back in 2016, we’ve been excited about letting an audience hear all the great music we knew about already, and then all the music we subsequently discovered. But more than that, it became about letting people hear the experiences of the women who made the music tell their stories, something they had never really gotten the opportunity to do before.”
“I’m excited for people to hear this music and meet these amazing characters, both in the film and through the live events happening in conjunction with the screenings and beyond and I hope it can go some way to help change things for the bands of the future.”
Here’s the poster – and below that, lets have a listen to The McKinleys while we’re at it!
