If you know Tim Heidecker, he takes having a laugh pretty seriously and as well as being a fine comedian, writer, podcaster and musician, he’s also willing to put his money where his talented mouth is.
Tim, along with Eric Wareheim and Dave Kneebone founded Abso Lutely Productions which gave us ‘Tim and Eric Awesome Show’, ‘Comedy Bang! Bang!’ and the magically weird ‘Nathan For You’. Well, there’s now a record label too, which is brilliant news. Of course, it is called Abso Lutely Records.
Heidecker says: “I grew up loving comedy records and there’s very little of them these days. I’m excited about this new arm of Abso to do what it always does: make the best stuff the best possible way from soup to nuts.”
If you’re thinking that this is a very handy way for Heidecker to put his own music out, firstly, shut up. Secondly, the debut release from the new label will be Tim Platt’s new comedy LP ‘Teeth Like Beak’, and it’s already on Spotify if you want a listen. Platt has written songs for The Tonight Show and Sesame Street, so no slouch.
It’s a mixture of skits, songs and stand-up, and he says: “Abso Lutely has introduced me to so many comedians that I’ve become obsessed with. I’ve always been in awe of how Dave and Abso produce shows that are ambitious, specific, and unlike anything else on screen. It is so exciting to share in that legacy with this new label, which is equally committed to putting out the next coolest thing from the next most innovative comedian with whom you’re about to become obsessed.”
While there has been some comedy vinyl releases recently – John Mulaney had some of his shows cut to vinyl – this feels a little different in that cool ’70s lunatics taking over the asylum kinda way that you just have to applaud. Abso are not short of hits, so we’re hoping this opens the door to a load of new people buying new comedy records for the first time since the ’80s.
