In another week, this would have been an album review – and maybe it still will – but sometimes you don’t want to read someone’s thoughts about what makes music work and how great a song is. Maybe you just want to listen to some tracks and make your own mind up?
How are we supposed to guess what you’re thinking through these cold, unthinking screens we’re all gawping at constantly? Either way, Nice Biscuit – great band name, great snack, and it turns out, cool songs.
Nice Biscuit are another psychedelic band who hail from Australia, because down there, they’ve genuinely got the best psychedelic scene on the planet right now. We don’t know why and perhaps it doesn’t matter one bit, but Down Under, they’ve got an embarrassment of riches for inventive, psychedelic rock and pop groups and we’re very jealous.
The new LP is called ‘SOS’ and we’re going to dash off and listen to the whole thing as soon as we can, because we just heard ‘Love That Takes You Up’ and it’s fantastic.
Amongst the psychedelic rock, there’s flourishes of disco and jazz too, which is always welcome because a lot of psychedelic groups can be far too deferential to the source material, where Nice Biscuit are willing to soak up whatever they’ve been digging and churn it through their own acid-machine to make something that makes sense in 2024.
They also have a song called ‘Fade Away’ which, despite being possibly the millionth song to have that title, is also very cool. Apparently, the band split off into two camp with Kurt Melvin, Nick Cavendish and Jess Ferronato writing the instrumental tracks and joint voxers Billie Starr and Grace Cuell take care of the melodies and words. Neat.
