Kate Bush spooks pretty easily, so while it’s okay to get excited at the prospect of new music from her, please don’t frighten her off with over-the-top proclamations and hype she can’t live up to, okay? Cheers, thanks, magic. No-one is listening, are they?
She’s said, in an interview with Radio 4, that she’s got “lots of ideas” and she’d like to pursue them. This came about as she was promoting a new short film she’s written and directed called ‘Little Shrew’. The film aims to raise money for War Child and you can watch it on her website right now. It’s a beautiful little thing and will remind of the ace folk-animation flicks that we saw in the ’70s and ’80s.
“I started working on it [with illustrator Jim Kay] a couple of years ago, it was not long after the Ukrainian war broke out, and I think it was such a shock for all of us,” said Bush. “It’s been such a long period of peace we’d all been living through. And I just felt I wanted to make a little animation that would feature, originally, a little girl. It was really the idea of children caught up in war. I wanted to draw attention to how horrific it is for children.”
“We went through the pandemic, that was a huge shock, and I think we felt that, once that was over, that we would be able to get on with some kind of normal life. But in fact it just seems to be going from one situation to another, and more wars seem to be breaking out all the time.”
Elsewhere, she said that she’s been busy with archival work on her impressive back catalogue, but… “I’m very keen to start working on a new album when I’ve got this finished. I’ve got lots of ideas and I’m really looking forward to getting back into that creative space, it’s been a long time.”
Get that? She’s tentatively making her way back to the studio and new Kate Bush music is always welcome because, frankly, there’s never been anyone like her. Here’s hoping it is sooner rather than later!
