Wings fans are in for a treat! There’s a new book coming out, officially in tandem with Paul McCartney, and filled with ace photos and drawn from over 500,000 words, based on dozens of hours of interviews with Macca and key figures in the Wings universe.
The book is called ‘Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run’, and looks at McCartney unlikely blossoming in a post-Beatle world, and the triumphs and troubles of his group which ran until 1981, with his wife Linda in tow.
McCartney says: “I’m so very happy to be transported back to the time that was Wings and relive some of our madcap adventures through this book. Starting from scratch after The Beatles felt crazy at times. There were some very difficult moments and I often questioned my decision. But as we got better I thought, ‘OK this is really good.’ We proved Wings could be a really good band. To play to huge audiences in the same way The Beatles had and have an impact in a different way. It was a huge buzz.”
The book is perfectly timed as the Wings catalogue has come in for a reappraisal in recent years, and people have been giving it long overdue love.
Edited by the historian Ted Widmer and following the nine Wings LPs, this oral history looks at the impact of the Beatles break-up, the various incantations of the group, the mayhem in Nigeria, the ad-hoc university tour, and of course, some amazing music and inside info on what it was like to be a member of Wings.
Here’s a trailer.
