We wrote about the new Spinal Tap movie a while ago, and we could link to that piece to prove it, but you wouldn’t click it, so what’s the point? We’ll recap here either way. The good news is, is that a teaser has been released for you to watch!
It’s called Spinal Tap II: The End Continues – a neat little joke, as using the roman numerals looks like ’11’, which the band notoriously went to on their amps.
1984’s mockumentary is a seminal piece of work, and Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer are coming back to portray the metal trio once again.
It looks like the new movie will be out some time in September of this year, and with a callback to amps going to eleven, these new ones go to ‘infinity’, and then the mighty ‘Stonehenge’ kicks in, and all is well in the world.
Of course, there’s always a risk when anyone goes back to a legendary project. However, it’s not like Guest & Co haven’t been making brilliant comedies in the interim. If you’ve not seen ‘A Mighty Wind’, rectify that as soon as possible.
This new one has cameos from some heavy hitters, just like the original film did. This time, you’ll get Paul McCartney, Questlove, Elton John, Garth Brooks and more.
In an interview, director Rob Reiner said: “Nigel has been running a cheese and guitar shop in Berwick-upon-Tweed. He’s also been performing with a local folk band in the village that play penny whistle and mandolin, and he plays electric guitar with them. We show a little clip of that.”
“David St. Hubbins has been living in Morro Bay in California, and he’s been writing music for podcasts, particularly this one true-crime podcast called ‘The Trouble With Murder.’ He also writes the music that you hear when you’re on hold on the phone.”
“Derek is living in London and is now the curator of the New Museum of Glue. He’s curated glue from every country in the world – the whole history of glue – and he shows me around. He’s also been performing with a philharmonic orchestra, and he’s written this kind of symphony about the fact that the devil wears a bad hair piece. It’s called Hell Toupée.”
One really great thing is that we’ll see a return of Fran Drescher (hopefully as the bad-ass Bobbi Flekman, again) and Paul Shaffer (hopefully as the hapless Artie Fufkin).
The magical John Michael Higgins, who you will have seen in A Mighty Wind makes an appearance too, as well as The Thick Of It’s Chris Addison, and Taskmaster alum Kerry Godliman.
We feel the movie is in safe hands. Here’s the teaser.
