WORDS ABOUT MUSIC + POP CULTURE

MARK FRY / NEW ACID FOLK

Anyone who has heard ‘Dreaming With Alice’ will no doubt have lost their damn minds thinking about how incredible ‘Mandolin Man’ is – one of the greatest acid-folk tracks of a generation, and seemingly one of those songs recorded by someone who didn’t get a fair crack, and lost to the midsts of time.

Well, not true of Mark Fry who releases a new LP called ‘Not On The Radar’ with Second Language records on May 16th.

Even better, for those that can travel, Fry will make a rare live appearance at London’s Stone Nest on the same day (tickets available to buy here). It’ll be wonderful to be afforded the chance to show some love.

Fry dipped out of view after the release of ‘Dreaming With Alice’ for nigh-on four decades, where instead he focused on painting. However, he recorded again in 2011 in a collaboration with The A. Lords, on ‘I Lived In Trees’.

This new album sees Fry talking about the disconnect between him, and modern life: “When I’m working, I need a sense of solitude in order to find that space towards the edge where there’s a point of connection between now and then. That’s where my songs and paintings are hiding. Some songs come so fast that I’m not even present, I don’t remember being there. Others I have to chip away at. I often write music very late at night or early in the morning – if I’m lucky I can catch myself unawares then. I always wanted to make an album like this, recording live with everyone playing together in the same room. It’s a spontaneous creative experience, and the intensity of it is quite different from what happens when you lay down tracks separately.”

The new album will be available on vinyl and CD, as well as the ubiquitous download and streaming. There’s a teaser for you to look at too, and the whole thing makes us feel very gooey and good inside.
