LIZZO TO PLAY ROSETTA THARPE

It really is about time that Sister Rosetta Tharpe had a biopic, seeing as she influenced an entire generation of rock ‘n’ roll artists who came after her – a real trailblazer, and more importantly, in possession of a ferocious talent.

With that in mind, a biopic we will get, and playing her will be multi-instrumentalist Lizzo, who recently dipped her toe into rock music herself with some new, New Wave-ish releases.

Amazon/MGM will be making the flick of the gospel singer, and it doesn’t have a release date yet, so calm your passions before you start thinking about queuing up, outside the local Odeon. There’s no director signed-up for it, but it seems joining Lizzo will be Forest Whitaker.

Deadline say that Rosetta will “capture a pivotal period in Tharpe’s life — one of groundbreaking innovation, defiant passion and secret love. As she shatters musical boundaries with her signature guitar sound, she must navigate societal constraints, conceal her love for another woman and ultimately transform a wedding into one of the most legendary concerts in history: the first stadium show.”

Now a rightful member of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, let’s watch the great clip of Tharpe playing at a train station in Manchester in the ’60s.
