He may not be a household name, but chances are, Wizz Jones is one of your favourite’s favourites. A legend of the Brit folk scene, sadly, Wizz has left the building, aged 86 years old.
Named ‘Wizz’ by his mum – a nickname taken from The Beano character Wizzy the Wuz and given to him by his mum – Jones was one of the finest to come from London’s folk scene in the ’60s, and admired for being one of the more progressive guitarists on the scene.
A versatile player, who drew influences from all over the place, Wizz released music and toured throughout his life, both solo and teaming up with others. Although the likes of Bert Jansch, John Renbourn and Davey Graham may have been better known, Wizz was right up there with them, with Jansch saying of Wizz; “I think he’s the most underrated guitarist ever.”
Bruce Springsteen was a fan, opening a show some years back, with the Wizz song, ‘When I Leave Berlin’.
Wizz’s son ,Simeon, confirmed the news, saying that his father had been unwell, and passed away peacefully in hospital.
He added: “His loss has left a huge hole in the lives of our family and has robbed the music world of one of its precious treasures. His health declined rapidly this year and we thank Trinity Hospice for making his last few days as comfortable as possible.”
