Jazz never died, but it did feel harder to find since major music publications effectively turned their back on it some time in the ’70s. Jazz is of course, in rude health and as disparate as it ever was.
With that, we were super thrilled while listening to baritone sax’er Zoh Amba’s new one, which is taken from new album ‘Sun’, which will be released on June 27th.
For those taking notes, they’re playing with Caroline Morton (on bass), Lex Korton (on piano) and Miguel Marcel Russel (on percussion), and it’s modern, very musical jazz which has the uplifting qualities of all the great spiritual jazz LPs we’ve listened to over the years.
Jazz is generally quite difficult to pin down when you’re not in possession of all the lingo that pervades the jazz world, but rest assured, this is a modern sounding record and a very good piece of music which, ultimately, is the thing that’s most important.
