There’s a new maxim doing the rounds which, once you read it, you can’t really unsee it, and points to why piracy is back.
“If streaming isn’t ownership, then piracy isn’t theft.”
Piracy went away for a while, with Spotify and Netflix seemingly being the two silver bullets that solved the problem of stealing content. The ease of use were better than the often confusing torrent sites and the like, and the subscription fees seemed fair.
However, physical media made a comeback and the illegal sites got their acts together. As subscription sites grew in number, and prices went up – and not to mention tech bros getting in bed with bad politics – piracy sites came back even harder.
In TV terms, illegal apps were easy to use, have no geographic location problems, and the streaming services combined were too expensive to keep up with.
It’s hardly surprising.
Now, watch this video which breaks it all down. This one focuses on television and movies, but you can imagine there’s something similar happening with music too.
