There’s a lot of stuff knocking around passing itself off as psychedelic music these days with little more than a wibbly synth and a gentle fuzz guitar. That means, when something genuinely psychedelic crops up, you need to hold it close and give it water and attention.
With that, we go to the magical sound of ttwig who brings a uniqueness to proceedings with the new ‘Hang Ten Colors to Catch the Sun’ album. It’s avant garde in places, soaked in dappled sonic sunshine and is one of those long-players trying to whisk you up and blast you into space.
The single below is called ‘I Wanna Be A Dog’ and is from a suite of tracks that was apparently inspired by drives in a 2016 Subaru named Betty, and a whole load of gorgeous West Coast sunsets too.
The whole thing is cut with that super charming DIY bedroom pop ethos, mixed with indie-psych and swirly chamber pop.
Check the single out, then you’d be advised to check out the album and listen to the whole thing in one-swoop – which is how you should listen to all psychedelic albums.
There’s echoes of modern groups like Tame Impala, Mac DeMarco and Toro Y Moi, but you’ll also feel a wave of ’60s psychedelic music as well as cool library records and Stereolab. Well worth your time.
Gorgeous, dreamy stuff.
