“I’m not a citizen of America. Isn’t that crazy?” Those are the words of Nicki Minaj, to her fans in a livestream, some years ago. “I was born on a beautiful island called Trinidad and Tobago. But I’ve been in the States for many years. You would think that with the millions of dollars that I’ve paid in taxes to this country that I would have been given an honorary citizenship many, many, many thousands of years ago.”
She’s also said: “I came to this country as an illegal immigrant at 5 years old. I can’t imagine the horror of being in a strange place and having my parents stripped away from me at the age of 5. This is so scary to me. Please stop this. Can you try to imagine the terror & panic these kids feel right now? Not knowing if their parents are dead or alive, if they’ll ever see them again.”
With that, we fast-forward to the present day, where she’s courting the Republican party, which has resulted in the vice president of the United States tweeting: “Nicki > Cardi.”
Clearly, JD Vance hasn’t got better things to be getting on with, but hey ho, it’s just a tweet right? Vance has been getting involved with Minaj and Cardi B’s spat, which has been running ugly for a while now, with Vance’s replying to a post that was doing the rounds that said “Vance > Rants”, amongst other posts like “The Vance > The Gav Nots”
She’s also on record as saying: “Nothing brings me joy like the Vance memes & knowing he leaned into it like a boss … But make no mistake, Vance is an assassin. Don’t debate him. On anything. Quick as a computer. Maybe quicker.”
If the Republican Party have learned anything this past few months, is that there’s good traction in rage-baiting musicians by using their music in videos, and the likes of Sabrina Carpenter and Olivia Rodrigo reacting angrily gets them a fair amount of traffic.
However, they’ve got a rare coup in all this, garnering the attention of Minaj who is considerably more relevant than the previous musicians who have circled around the MAGA set.
What’s interesting is that Minaj’s comments about illegal immigration from years past are at odds with the current Republican regime – polar opposites in fact. Now, if the spirit of ‘well, grown-ups can disagree’, which right-wing political heads say all the time, then we’re assuming Nicki’s stans will be in agreement with that too.
Minaj has gone on to throw her full support, it seems, behind Donald Trump, with a series of tweets about the president, which could well be destined to be referred to as ‘now deleted’ – we’ll see.
Given the status of her current husband, the support of Trump, 6ix 9ine, her brother, makes you wonder where she got the inspiration for her Roman Zolanski alter ego, eh?
