WORDS ABOUT MUSIC + POP CULTURE

MORE GREEN-HOUSE IS A GREAT THING

We’ve written about Green-House and featured them on our radio show – fact is, in ambient circles, you won’t find many records better. With that, it’s wonderful to learn that there’s a new album due called ‘Hinterlands’.

If you’re sold enough and just want the facts, it’ll be released on 20th March on Ghostly International, and it’ll be on vinyl, cassette, CD, and of course, downloads and streaming.

Green-House was originally a project from Olive Ardizoni, but now it is an official duo, with Michael Flanagan too. While loosely, it is ambient music, there’s echoes of folk and even jazz, and something much more rural than relying purely on electronics.

It’s freeform and winding, but there’s something of the environment about the Green-House project that makes the music incredibly engaging.

They say of the new track, which you can hear below: “For this video we wanted to do something that blended physical and digital animation to mirror the way that we wrote the song as a mix between sampled real instruments and digital sound design.  By projecting a series of photos (taken by Olive in Yosemite and Inyo national forest) onto a small dish of water and slowly dripping water into the centre of the reflected image, we were able to find interesting and unique textures and movements that we would have never made on our own.”

Regarding the new LP: “This record is us letting go a little bit as well, giving ourselves the freedom to just write and see what happens, to let the music grow naturally. We try to utilise what’s right in front of us, just being in an urban environment and making do with what’s there in order to continue to foster that connection we have to the natural world.”

For fans of Tomita, Library music, pastoral psychedelic music, acid folk, Boards of Canada, ambient and spiritual jazz, Green-House need to be on your radar. Music that hits you from the off, and reveals more on each listen.

We are very excited at the prospect of this new album, especially given how much ‘Six Songs For Invisible Gardens’ has been on rotation. Genuinely essential.

You can pre-order the album here.
