WORDS ABOUT MUSIC + POP CULTURE

WHO?: DJ SABRINA THE TEENAGE DJ

If you’ve been pining over some cutnpaste goodtime house adjacent music, where are you going to go apart from maybe your old Avalanches LP, Ross From Friends, and maybe some lo-fi mixes on YouTube? Well, turns out theres a mysterious new artist on the block with a wilfully silly name that we can’t get mad at, even if we wanted to.

It’s no typo – welcome to the fuzzy, nostalgic world of DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ.

Sample-heavy, vaporwave graphic design, and all fun, the producer has been doing bits online to those in the know for a while now, and resulting in a collab with hipster pop darlings The 1975. There’s even rumours that the whole thing is something to do with Aphex Twin, but we’re not having that – that’s far too convenient.

Since ’17, DJSTTDJ has been making day-glo sampledelic bedroom bops at an impressive rate. There’ll be a boxset this year, that’s how much material we’ve collectively missed. Kitschy sure, but very up and very joyful in existence. There’s an element of perversity too, but that’s never a bad thing. It’s supremely pop-focused too, with echoes of those glorious summery pop-house hits of the late ’90s/early ’00s.

Her debut ‘Makin’ Magick’ was made with the helping hand of her sibling (called ‘Salem’, of course) and in 2020, released an epic 3 hour album called ‘Charmed’, which is when it all started kicking off.

Through all the sugar and nostalgia, there’s something really off-kilter about it all (which is maybe where the Aphex notion comes from, again, even though we’re not buying that) and tracks can bubble along quite pleasantly, before revealing something quite alien and skewed. It’s super fun stuff. Even if you think you don’t quite get it at first, you’ll scrabble around a while because there’s definitely something there.

Slo-fidelity? Outsider pop? Whatever it is, there’s something super moreish about it.

Anyway, if you’re looking to contribute, there’s a Bandcamp link below and this is definitely someone to keep an eye on, especially now there’s the beginnings of real national press.

Sign up if you like your fun cut with a dose of the weirds.
