YOU CAN’T SIT WITH COCO & CLAIR CLAIR

They’re mean. Every track is a diss track. Against who? Someone with receding hair. Someone boring. Copycats. Cluck clucking bitches. Waking up at 8am. You name it, they’re over it already.

Like over exposed Instax shots at some NY loft party circa 2005, like early mixtape culture mixed with Kreayshawn’s Internet savvy, obscure electronica 45s, beat up iPod Touches loaded up with hyperpop, and two cool kids you wanna sit with, but won’t, because they might make you cry.

Vinegary bars and icy, lighter than air vocals, Coco & Clair Clair sound like a summer project made bored between terms. And that’s all compliment.

It’s amateurish. Childlike. It’s really cool and cheeky. If you don’t get them, there’s a nagging feeling it’s probably your fault. It’s probably lame of you to say you like them too. What to do?

It’s all cut with a wry self obsession and aloofness and it’s probably best we all play it cool in public and gush about their LP ‘Sexy’ in private.

Coco and Clair Clair have Auto-Tune on tap, but it feels more like dreamy shoegaze pop than someone aping Atlanta trap. The songs aren’t cruel per se, rather, drily funny. Like, occasionally laughing out loud.

Y’all dudes love talking y’all shit
Like some Golden Girls, y’all old hags look hit
Rest in peace to Betty White though

They maintain they’re hotter and cooler than everyone else, and that everyone wants to be them, and everyone is lame and annoying, and honestly, it feels like more a subversion than a standard brag. Or is it? We’re lame for even giving it this much thought, even though Coco and Clair Clair won’t be surprised at the attention.

See, it’s the silliness of it all. Their imperial cockiness is just really charming and daft. I mean, their name alone!

They bored of dating, ghosting everyone, their exes obsessed, and then casually dropping a line like “he wanna sync up to my period – meanwhile he’s saved on my phone as ‘idiot.’”

It’s sharp as a tack and the album has whip smart rhythms and so many withering hooks and looks that it might be the funnest, campest pop album in yonks. These feel like cult favourites, but will they end up blowing up? Another viral hit and they just might.

Keep an eye on these. It might all be a joke at your expense. It might be the coolest thing you hear. It’s 100% not going to be dull.

[…] We got enthusiastic after being tipped off about them after the release of their first LP, and now, they’ve burrowed further into their influences, but emerged with something of a transition in their sound. It’s not like they’ve gone country or anything, but they’ve developed and proving to be an alt pop act worth repeat listens. What has shown itself is more vulnerability, but delivered in an ice-cold, disaffected manner that made them so charming in the first place. There’s the mildest of echoes of Lana Del Rey’s doompop, mixed in with electro and maybe vaporwave, all pinned with beats less lo-fi than their first cut. There’s chopped up trap, and the duo boast about being too big for the sleb dating app Raya, and the fact we didn’t even know that there was such an app speaks to the sharpened point that Coco + Clair Clair speak through.
