Baritone vocals, intense music, soundscapes about alienation in the inner city and videos shot in black and white with a twangy bass and everyone in long overcoats hoping someone asks them what new wave Polish cinema they’ve been watching?
Sounds like Joy Division doesn’t it? Well, yes.
If you like bands that either sound like Joy Division, or remind you of Joy Division, or indeed, bands that would argue that they’re in fact very different from Joy Division even though they’re a great band and hugely influential on us we just think we’re very different that’s all, you’re in for a treat.
It’s no bad thing sounding like an influential band like Joy Division, but we can imagine this band get a bit annoyed being likened to someone else.
Any road, DAMEFRISØR have a new single out called ‘D.O.D.’ and vocalist Kazhi Jahfar says: “’D.O.D.’ is about feeling invisible. The song talks about the feeling of going through something but feeling as though no one is aware of your existence. Loneliness in cities is a recurring theme across the record, musically I feel like the song explores the intensity of trying to be seen with all efforts amounting to nothing. Lyrically it’s a sort of internal monologue reacting to the stressful atmosphere created by that feeling.”
Like Joy Division.
Anyway, they’re from Bristol, they’re a new young band. Go support them. Bet the gigs are loud and weird and what more can you ask for if you’re suffering from a bit of existential dread?
