If you’re very knowledgable about music and go on about it, there’s no telling you anything. For the rest of everyone, there’s a new app that you might like! You might not! We’re not your real dad. Anyway, an app.
So, there’s a new app out that’s called Rewind and what it intends to do is to open up the world of music from years past to new listeners. Noble. When you’ve run out of new music to listen to, there’s always something from the past you’ve missed – that’s the beauty of good tunes, eh? This app hopes to make the whole finding older songs easier, and of course, with the successes of songs of yore reaching new audiences through things like Stranger Things (Steve Miller Band and Kate Bush doing well there), there’s clearly an appetite for it.
The app was built by Ziad Al Halabi who works at TIDAL by day, and with Rewind, he tinkered away at it on the weekends for fun, and now we have a nice time travelling device for those who want to do the deep dives on the charts.
The app says: “What would it be like if you opened your favourite music app in 1991? Or 1965? What are the biggest hits at the time? Who are the top artists or the rising new ones?”
This will be great for younger listeners or indeed, older listeners who want to be reminded of their youth! There’s more too, with genre defining playlists generated, as well as a news section, so you can see the major events going down when the music was released. That’s a neat function. It’d be cool, being a younger listener, finding out about the Cold War while listening to some gloomy post-punk to give the whole experience a bit more context and edge.
There’ll also be era specific ads, so while listening to ’80s synthpop, you’ll get ads for synthesizers current to the time. It’s all good and fun learning.
If you want to play around with it, it is available as a free download on both Android and iOS
