Little Richard has long been adored, but he never truly got his flowers like many of his contemporaries did.
That’s about to change. And about fucking time.
Director Lisa Cortés’ has made a documentary about the greatest rock ‘n’ roll singer of all time called ‘Little Richard: I Am Everything’, which not only looks at his incredible talent and personality, but also, shines a light on the fact he was absolutely not straight.
There’s testimonials from legends who love him, and importantly, Black and queer scholars, as well as tales from family and friends.
Of course, we’ll hear from the man himself, and we’ll all nod in agreement while we hear about the wilful appropriation of rock ‘n’ roll and whitewashing that saw Elvis dubbed The King instead of Richard.
Little Richard has always been The King to us.
There’ll be new and archival footage of Little Richard, as well as other pioneers like Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who gave Richard his break!
Cortés will look at America’s strange relationship with religion, sex, and rock ’n’ roll, and of course, racial tensions, which should have probably buried Little Richard from the off.
That’s the thing though. There’s nothing anyone could have ever done to stop the burning comet that was Little Richard.
Here’s the trailer.
