WORDS ABOUT MUSIC + POP CULTURE

NEW NONAME IS GREAT NEWS

Noname is one of the most prodigiously talented rappers on the planet and wilfully at odds with the rest of the pack, which makes her music such a scintillating prospect. Melding beat poetry with Neo Soul, golden age funk, and a delivery that allows for both self-doubt and self-assurance, she’s been making some of the hottest records around for a while.

The good news is that she’ll release a new album called ‘Sundial’ this summer.

In typical form, she quietly returned to social media, publishing a simple graphic that stated that the record is titled ‘Sundial’ and will be released in July, adding “thank you for everything…

There was a handful of tracks released before her massive mixtape ‘Telefone’ in 2016, which was followed by the brilliant ‘Room 25’. There were some locked antlers with J Cole (she won, for the record) and some cool guest spots, before she backed away from music to focus on her book club where she focused on the uplift of POC voices and highlighting works written by authors of colour, all the while, building a community and sending books to people in prison.

She’s walks it like she talks it.

Having announced an album called ‘Factory Baby’, it was shelved and it was rumoured she’d be quitting music altogether. In 2022, she spoke again, saying that “maybe 30 is too young to retire.”

So while the next LP isn’t absolutely guaranteed, we’re allowing ourselves to be excited at the prospect of hearing it. She’s a fabulous talent and genuinely one of Chicago’s finest (and that’s a city with some pedigree). There’s no artwork, there’s no word of who might feature or production notes or anything like that… but no matter… we’re listening either way!
