WORDS ABOUT MUSIC + POP CULTURE

AI MUSIC CREATORS ARE DEFFO GETTING SUED SOON

As everyone has a laugh mucking around with AI and asking it daft questions, the comfortingly humourless record companies of the world are almost certainly readying their lawyers. Why?

Well, if you can’t be arsed waiting for your fave band to get back together, you can get the robots to do it.

First off – there’s a whole Oasis ‘reunion’ LP that has been made by AI (impishly called AISIS) and honestly, flicking through it, it does sound like Oasis. There’s sections of the album that are incredibly convincing. Sure, you may not be able to make out a lot of the lyrics, but honestly, who gives a shiny shit about Oasis lyrics in the first place?

Neck 40 cans of Madri, pop on your shell-toes, and you could probably have a very nice time with it, if that’s your thing. Of course, if you hate Oasis, you can have a laugh and sneer your way through this. No-one loses, on that score.

Oasis aren’t the only ones getting poked at with software.

One track called ‘Heart On My Sleeve’ is a mimic of Drake and The Weeknd and is ‘about’ Selena Gomez, and honestly, if this is the burgeoning version of this software, we really might be on the precipice of something here, like the invention of the sampler or the synth. It’s mental. The Drake number is ridiculously convincing in places, with a lyric that says: “I came in with my ex like Selena to flex – bumpin’ Justin Bieber the fever ain’t left.

You telling us that this couldn’t be a Drake lyric? It even has a Metro Boomin’ shout out. And honestly, it’s about as interesting as Drake The Human’s last drop.

Drake isn’t happy about all this tech, previously saying “this is the final straw AI” on socials. Universal Music Group have voiced their concerns too, writing to streaming services to stop letting AI access their songs. They said: “We will not hesitate to take steps to protect our rights and those of our artists.”

Who would have ever seen this coming? Was it on anyone’s 2023 Bingo Card? Not ours. Heard Robot Rihanna doing a ‘cover’ of Beyonce’s ‘Cuff It’?

While RiRi/Yonce track might be sticky legally, the rest? You can just say it’s satire can’t you? No copyright is being hurt right? It just sounds like them.

With that, there’s this new thing called the ‘Human Artistry Campaign’, which is a gaggle of musicians who want to ensure that artificial intelligence won’t harm or ‘erode’ creativity by humans. What a mental sentence that was to type. It’s backed by the RIAA, BPI and other bigwigs too.

“There is so much potential with AI but it also presents risks to our creative community,” said Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr, launching the initiative.

The group’s site says: “As new technologies emerge and enter such central aspects of our existence, it must be done responsibly and with respect for the irreplaceable artists, performers, and creatives who have shaped our history and will chart the next chapters of human experience. These principles outline how we can responsibly use artificial intelligence  – to support human creativity and accomplishment with respect to the inimitable value of human artistry and expression.”

With the weird ‘Blurred Lines’ case, there’s trouble in them thar hills and we absolutely not heard the last of this. We wonder what Kraftwerk make of all this…
