You may not know Bombino, but listen to the song below and you’ll wish you did already. Bombino is a Nigerian artist who sings in Tamasheq and was the subject of the movie ‘Agadez, the Music and the Rebellion’.
It’s heavy political music, but also joyful and psychedelic in places, and his music sprung out of a tension that came about in Niger and Tuareg Rebellion, with the government trying to ban guitars for the Tuareg. Bombino said of it: “I do not see my guitar as a gun but rather as a hammer with which to help build the house of the Tuareg people.”
Two musicians were executed during this time, so it’s no joke that Bombino was making the music he makes. And there’s a new tuff-as-nails single from the great man called ‘Aitma’ which will blow your socks off.
Don’t sleep on this.
